How do I take a pedal arm off my push bike?

I need to swap the pedal arm on my push bike as the treads have been sheared where i put the pedal in (Kids!)
I have so far hit it with varying size hammers but it doesnt appear to be shifting. I have taken the bolt out already before any mentions that! Anyone know anything on this one?
